One thing that frequently bothered me was the painted over thicccc layer of dust on the return vent. So during an insomnia fueled cleaning spree, I chipped through the paint icing to get to the screws and when I chiseled the cover off, out fell a solid brick of dust blocking the entire vent up. There is probably still a moisture problem inside the wall. Find the source. Stop the water. Clean out all black mold. Treat area with anti fungal solution. Let it dry. Paint any affected wood with anti mold paint to block mold from growing again. Replace sheetrock & repaint.
